Veteran historian Don Stafford has published numerous articles and lectured widely within New Zealand and overseas on the Polynesian people of New Zealand. His first major work was Te Arawa (1967), a substantial history of Rotorua Maori. In 1980 he was awarded an MBE and a CBE followed in 1994 as well as an honorary doctorate from the University of Waikato. He is also the author of the multi-volume Landmarks of Te Arawa (1994), Introducing Maori Culture (1996) and Natural New Zealand: an illustrated guide (2003) among other titles.
