Letters from Guilin : a foreign expert at large

Author(s): June Garden

Biography/Memoir

Letters from Guilin is an amusing and sometimes tense account of the year the author spent in Guilin, teaching English as a second language, at the Guilin University. The reader follows June through the turbulent months of 1988-89, when the student protests erupted in Beijing. It is an account of her experiences as a teacher, and as a tourist in large cities such as Beijing and small towns like the ancient, walled city of Dali. She was also, at times, an uneasy observer of the student riots in 1989. It is a compilation of the letters written to family in NZ at this time with each chapter containing the letters written in that month.
